Deepika Padukone, Kangana Ranaut, Sonam Kapoor and many other actresses are expressing their concern over the big issue of gender inequality in Bollywood. It is an open secret that the male leads are paid a LOT more than their female counterparts in Bollywood. Gen Y stars are therefore wary of this trend and beginning to question it, and rightly so.

However, Anupam Kher revealed a very interesting fact in one of his social media interactions with fans. The actor, who is busy with his play 'Mera Vo Matlab Nahi Tha', took up a question and answer session with his fans on 'Gender Inequality'. When a fan asked him about the remuneration differences in Bollywood, Anupam revealed that Madhuri Dixit was in fact paid a lot more than Salman Khan for their timeless classic 'Hum Aapke Hai Kaun'.

When the fan asked, "@AnupamPkher @HeforShe The actress are paid less as compared to the actors. Firstly,Gender Equality should start frm here.Wat u think #AskAnupam", Anupam replied, "I agree in certain cases it is true. But Madhuri was paid more than Salman in HAHK.:)"

Well, what do you think of that?

A certain news about remunerations was doing the rounds last week. It so happened that while discussing 'gender equality', Anupam Kher announced on Twitter that Madhuri Dixit was paid more than Salman Khan in 'Hum Aapke Hain Kaun'. As expected, this news took Twitterati by storm. When Salman was asked to comment on the issue, the Bhaijaan had said, "I do not think it is true. However, I wish that it were true."

Well, listen to the answer right from the horse's mouth. Madhuri Dixit is seen here on Anupam Kher's show. When Anupam asked Madhuri, "Were you indeed paid more than Salman Khan in 'Hum Aapke Hain Kaun', Madhuri burst into splits of laughter. In her usual, charming manner Madhuri joked, "Well, I heard the news and I just went with the flow, I let the news roll".

Well isn't that cute? Salman and Madhuri displayed some crackling chemisty in HAHK. Their pairing was much appreciated and the film ended up becoming a classic. Well, who cares who was paid more, we love them both, don't we?

Who's your favorite Rajshri heroine?

$
0
0
NULL

In Bollywood, no actress is complete without being part of the quintessential Rajshri production. Palatial houses, big families, high value production numbers with every cast member joining in for song and dance, festivals, weddings, a little conflict and a satisfying resolution.

The romance in Rajshri films is sweet. There's a lot of coyness, shyness and whispering involved. Love is in its purest form. The protagonists have generally never fallen for anyone before they fall for each other.

Keeping in mind these traditional values that the Barjatya family likes to hold on to, even the main Rajshri girl has to uphold the virtue of the chaste bahurani. She needs to be pretty, demure, charming. A woman who can be the best daughter-in-law understanding the value of family and honour. And of course, be good at the song and dance routine that comes with it.

What we know as the Rajshri heroine is representative of their films post 1989, after the production house got a rather massive makeover. As Sooraj Barjatya's upcoming film 'Prem Ratan Dhan Payo' starring Salman Khan and Sonam Kapoor nears completion, we take a look at Rajshri heroines - past, present and future.

Bhagyashree

This one-hit-wonder heroine played Suman opposite Salman's charismatic first-time Prem. Suman was everything Prem wasn't, and she was unlike any of the people he had known before. It was because of the strength of the love Suman and Prem shared, that he was able to come out of his father's shadow and make a life for himself. Additionally, the film explored themes of first love, friendship and rich vs. poor. It was one of the biggest hits of its time thanks to its soulful music and the chemistry between the two leads. Sadly, Bhagyashree was never able to repeat the magic of Maine Pyar Kiya. But she was the epitome of the demure Rajshri heroine.

Madhuri Dixit

Madhuri is perhaps the best remembered Rajshri heroine. She was part of Hum Aapke Hain Koun, which is one of the highest grossing Indian films of all time, and a remake of Rajshri's own Nadiya Ke Paar. While her character of Nisha was traditional in her values and morals, she was still modern in her own way. Nisha was fiesty and unapologetic in the way she spoke, and danced. She was unafraid to express her love to Prem, but was still ready to sacrifice it for the sake of family. All ended well though, and the film upheld Madhuri's standing as a huge star.

Tabu, Sonali Bendre and Karisma Kapoor

The family that eats together, lives together, stays together etc etc. This is the Rajshri film with perhaps the biggest starcast. The three ladies of Hum Saath Saath Hain played mates to Mohnish Behl, Salman Khan and Saif Ali Khan. While Tabu played the perfect mate to handicapped Vivek, and the perfect Sita to his Ram and the quintessetial 'bhabhi' , Sonali was the coy doctor who stuck by Prem even during turmoil. Karisma was the witty, outspoken and modern contrast from the other two. Three very different heroines joining hands to keep their family together.

Kareena Kapoor

Chitchor got a makeover, and the village belle Zareena Wahab got replaced by 'papa ki pari' Kareena in 'Main Prem Ki Deewani hoon'. Sanjana is in her college band, she writes poetry, she has a group of modern friends, she goes out on dates with her betrothed. She has a mind of her own. Basically, she's everything a Rajshri heroine is not. On the outside. Inside, Sanjana was ready to marry who her parents chose, and even though she loved Hrithik's Prem, she was ready to marry Abhishek's Prem for the sake of her family. At the end, she managed to get what she wanted because she was willing to sacrifice her happiness for the sake of honour.

Amrita Rao

It's back to the basics with Amrita Rao's Poonam in Vivah. Poonam is about to get married to Prem. This film explores the journey of two people who embark on an arranged marriage. And although, we hardly heard a word spoken by the leading lady, Poonam was the small town soft-spoken girl, who almost sacrificed her life to save her sister.

Sonam Kapoor

We have seen Sonam portray some strong-willed female characters on screen before. Additionally, Sonam is an extremely strong-will girl in real life too. It is therefore hard to imagine Sonam as the shy and demure, Rajshri girl. Well, lets wait and watch though. This Rajshri heroine might come with a new energy and a never-seen-before spark. What say?

Who is your favorite of the lot?

Retro Attack! When Madhuri Dixit interacted with fans over phone!

Madhuri Dixit the diva has been always a hit amidst her fans. Time and again, she made it a point to interact with them. Back in the days, when India wasn’t so digitally advanced and mankind didn’t know of mobile phones and video-chatting or facebooking or Twitter-chats, fan-mails and telephonic interviews were quite a hit.

Bringing to you one such video of the quintessential diva, where she is talking to various fans, we want to take an eye-stroll in the past.

The ‘ek do teen’ girl got chatty with her fans where she spoke about her hobbies and films and her roles. She even battle a question upon marriage. Back then she said, “No I am more interested in my career”. When the fan asked further if she would ever consider settling in America, Madhuri answered, “Oh yes! If my husband wants me to settle in America, I’ll settle there.”

And years later she did settle down in America.

The best part was when a caller was asking if she would have pest control done at her home or not. To that the ‘Dhak-dhak’ girl said, she would as her house is infested with cockroaches.

Watch this fun video.

Bollywood Star Kids Vs.Self-Made Actors: Who made it bigger in Bollywood!

$

Bollywood Film Fraternity opens its arms to actors from across the globe. But there is one tag that makes the entry into the Hindi Film Industry a tad bit easier, and that is the Star Kid tag. But having said that, there are many names in industry that have with their hard-work proven that to carve a niche in Bollywood it isn’t necessary to be star kid. Hence the league of self-made actors stepped in.

With the forerunners like Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Vinod Khanna, Rekha, Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit, Jackie Shroff among others, the league of self-made actors runs even today with newer names.

Since the Hindi Film era spans over a vast timeline, we shall be considering Star Kids and Self-Made actors 90s onwards.

The glorious 90s:

The era of Dhak-Dhak girl Madhuri, to SRK doing ‘Chaiyya Chaiyya’ atop a train, to Salman singing ‘Dil Deewana’, to Karisma dancing to “Sexy Sexy Mujhe Log Bole” the 90s even saw Anil Kapoor and Sridevi rule the era. Also, who can forget “Papa Kehte Hai” star Aamir emerging as the new-age romantic hero or Govinda making all dance along-with his expressive moves.

The era mostly saw Star-Kids rule the box-office as they were more in number. But that doesn’t mean that our self-build actors were behind in any way. In fact, they created frenzy and ruled like bosses.

The colorful 2000s:

We are 15 years into the 2000s and everything is getting more interesting year by year. We have seen Kareena’s Poo-Chameli, Hrithik’s super-cool moves, Abhishek’s Dhoom-Dhamaka, Priyanka Chopra’s desi-girl avatar, Ranbir’s earnest performances, Sonam’s ‘Khoobsoort’i, Deepika’s cocktail of roles, Katrina doing the ‘Namastey London’, Ranveer doing the rex and a lot more, Anushka’s badmashi and jiya re mode, Sonakshi Sinha’s Dabangg-giri, Varun’s cool hero and Badlapur shift, Sidharth’s student gone fighter avatar, Alia’s bubble bee demeanor to Kangana Ranaut’s Queen mode. Since the last decade and a half, we have seen Bollywood growing more and more. And it still has a whole line of newbies waiting to leave their mark.

The 2000s are mixed-bag, with cut-throat competition it becomes really tough to decide who is pacing ahead. With the influx of new talent each passing year from the both star-kids frat and new actors' guild with no Godfathers, Bollywood is ever-growing.

So who do you think made it bigger in Bollywood- StarKids or SelfMade Actors?

Lets us know!

Salman Khan has decided to host a special screening of 'Prem Ratan Dhan Payo' for Bhagyashree his 'Maine Pyaar Kiya' actress and Madhuri Dixit-Nene his 'Hum Aapke Hai Koun' co-star.

The actor who is all set to release his next- 'Prem ratan Dhan Payo', which is directed by Sooraj Barjatiya, has worked with Sooraj and both the actresses in the past on  films like 'Maine Pyaar Kiya' and 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun' respectively, both of which went on to become blockbusters.

“The idea came up during a discussion (involving his latest film’s marketing team), which Salman was also part of. Since his character is called Prem, once again in his next (he was also called Prem in HAHK and MPK, among others), Salman wants to show the film to both the actresses with whom he has shared screen space in the past as Prem,” says the spokesperson of the film.

"As of now no date has been fixed yet for the screening, as Salman is busy with the shoot of another film. But whenever he does get the time, Salman will personally invite Madhuri and Bhagyashree for the screening," reveals the spokesperson adding further, “Since they worked with Salman at the beginning of his career, he shares fond memories with them."

Salman Khan recently made a shocking statement. He said that his Prem Ratan Dhan Payo co-star Sonam Kapoor is better than diva and power house actress Madhuri Dixit. He had said in an interview, "Sonam is a very talented actress . I understand that she is known as a fashionista, fashion icon and people always talk about her clothes but that shouldn't take away from her talent. The kind of work Sonam has done in the movie is really good. If you see Madhuri in HAHK and if you see Sonam, I think Sonam has done a much better job than Madhuri. I have said that yesterday in my living room and I can definitely say that here also."

Though the actor had said it in all seriousness, he later backed off saying, "Madhuri will know it's not true so she will understand that I'm promoting Prem Ratan Dhan Payo."

Well, in a recent interview with Times of India, Salman was asked about this controversial comment, which went viral on the day that it had been reported. However, Salman smiled and said, "Madhuri will understand."

What do you think of that?
